TUXEDO, NEW YORK, NY – New York State Police say they are investigating a fatal car accident that took place Monday morning in the town of Tuxedo.

In a news release, state police said the crash happened on Old Route 17 near the border with Sloatsburg in Rockland County shortly after 7:30 a.m.

An investigation found that 23-year-old Ahkem Chu III was driving a 2007 Honda Accord southbound when he crossed over into the northbound lane of the roadway and hit a tree truck that was fully loaded. Chu, a resident of Chester, New York, was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Two people in the tree truck were not seriously injured in the crash.

State Police were assisted at the scene by police from Tuxedo and Ramapo.  It was not immediately clear why Chu crossed into the opposite lane.

The Hudson Valley Post reported that Chu was the son of retired NYPD Police Officer Maggie LaBoy.
