YONKERS, WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY – A driver died after being struck by a vehicle in Westchester County Wednesday, one of many accidents that occurred in icy road conditions in the New York area that morning.
According to the Journal News, the fatal incident occurred on the ramp connecting the eastbound Cross County Parkway to the northbound Bronx River Parkway at about 6:30 a.m.
Westchester County Police said the driver of a Mercedes sedan got out of his car after a previous accident brought traffic to a stop ahead of him. Another vehicle that was traveling down the ramp slid on the ice, hitting the Mercedes driver and his vehicle.
Despite life-saving measures attempted by paramedics and passersby, the victim died of his injuries. The man was a New York City resident whose name was not immediately released. The crash remains under investigation.
Police said there were dozens of other accidents in Westchester County due to the icy roads that resulted from freezing rain. One of the pileups, on the Hutchinson River Parkway near Boston Post Road in Pelham, involved more than 24 vehicles.
