Driver dead, passenger injured after car crashes into pole on Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK, NY – New York City police are investigating a fatal car accident that occurred on Staten Island Friday night, the Staten Island Advance reports.

Officers responded to the scene at 3687 Richmond Avenue in the Eltingville section after the incident was reported in a 911 call at about 11:50 p.m. Investigators determined that the driver of a Ford Taurus was going north on Richmond Avenue at a high rate of speed when he failed to properly navigate a curve in the roadway. The vehicle ended up crashing into a utility pole.

The driver was pronounced dead after being taken to Staten Island University South Hospital. He was identified as 24-year-old Robert Altieri of Bulls Head, Staten Island. A 24-year-old male passenger was taken to Staten Island University North Hospital in stable condition.

The wreck remains under investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad.

The Daily News reported that Altieri had attended Wagner High School and was a standout on the school baseball team.
