ST. JAMES, LONG ISLAND, NY – Police in Suffolk County are investigating a collision last week that left a driver critically injured, according to a report by Newsday.
Authorities responded to the scene of the crash Thursday in the area of Route 347 (Nesconset Highway) and Middle Country Road in St. James.
Investigators said 35-year-old Matthew Basile of Brentwood was driving a 2006 Hyundai westbound on Route 347 at about 1:35 a.m. when his vehicle crashed into the side of a tractor trailer that was going east on Middle Country Road.
Basile was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. The driver of the tractor trailer, 51-year-old Marsali Abdellatif of New Jersey, was not injured.
The Hyundai was impounded for a safety check while the tractor trailer was inspected at the scene by officers from the Motor Carrier Safety Section.
Anyone with information about the crash was asked to contact the Suffolk County Police Department Fourth Squad.
Westbound Route 347 and a section of Middle Country Road were closed down for the accident investigation.
