KEW GARDENS, QUEENS – New York City police said an alleged drunk driver was involved in a crash in Queens Friday night that killed a passenger in his car.
According to the New York Post, the accident took place on the Van Wyck Expressway near Jewel Avenue in the Kew Gardens section.
Investigators said the driver of a Honda Accord was headed north in the right lane of the expressway at about 11 p.m. The driver, identified as 31-year-old Luis Angamarca of Queens, swerved to the right shoulder and slammed into the back of a disabled Western Star tractor-trailer.
A passenger in the Accord, a 28-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. Angamarca was taken to New York-Presbyterian Queens hospital for treatment. The driver of the tractor-trailer was transported to the same hospital and was listed in stable condition.
Angamarca was charged with driving while ability impaired by alcohol and operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content .08 of 1%.
