Driver arrested on DWI charge following death of pedestrian in Suffolk County

MELVILLE, LONG ISLAND, NY – A suspected drunk driver was arrested following the death of a pedestrian on a Long Island roadway Friday night, according to Newsday.

The accident happened as the victim was walking across Broadhollow Road from east to west near the Long Island Expressway in Melville.  The person was hit at about 9:35 p.m. by a southbound Mazda CX-5 SUV driven by 48-year-old Shane Decamp of Coram. The victim, whose identity was not immediately released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Decamp remained at the scene, police said.  He was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated. Decamp was arraigned in court on Saturday in Central Islip and then released, with another court appearance set for Tuesday.

The vehicle involved in the incident was impounded for a safety check as police continue their investigation.
