Driver arrested for Suffolk County hit-and-run crash that injured 2 women

SELDEN, LONG ISLAND, NY – Police on Long Island arrested the driver who allegedly left the scene of a crash Thursday night that left two women injured, Newsday reports.

Suffolk County Police and Selden firefighters responded to the scene at the intersection of Boyle Road and Liberty Avenue after the incident took place at about 10 p.m.

Patch reported that 39-year-old Shaunakaye Vazquez of Selden was driving a Chevrolet Tahoe north on Boyle Road when the vehicle struck a Subaru sedan that was disabled on the shoulder. The impact caused the Subaru to hit a Jeep Wrangler parked in front of it.

51-year-old Nancy Mortello of Selden, who had gotten out of the Jeep to help with the Subaru, was pinned between the vehicles and suffered leg injuries. A passenger in the Subaru, 26-year-old Gabriella Giovinco of Selden, sustained minor injuries. Both women were hospitalized at Stony Brook University Hospital.

The Subaru was being driven by Mortello’s son, 28-year-old Douglas Taveras of Selden.

Vazquez was charged with driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident with serious injury.

The Tahoe was impounded as part of the investigation. Anyone with further information about the crash was asked to contact Suffolk County Police.
