DYKER HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN, NY – Police say they have arrested the driver responsible for the death of a young girl in a crash in Brooklyn Tuesday night, according to WABC.
The accident happened in the Dyker Heights section of the borough at about 8 p.m. Investigators said the 6-year-old victim was walking with her mother near her home in the area of 12th Avenue and 67th Street when she was struck by a southbound Lexus SUV that was making a left turn at the intersection. Police said the driver had crossed over the solid double yellow pavement markings and gone into oncoming traffic.
The girl was pronounced dead after being rushed to Maimonides Medical Center. She was hit as she was walking across the street with the pedestrian signal in her favor, according to the NYPD.
Police said the driver, identified as 30-year-old Qiuhua Zhu, kept going after the crash and headed east on 67th Street but then drove around the block and came back to the scene.
Zhu was subsequently arrested on multiple charges, including criminally negligent homicide, manslaughter, and vehicular assault.
