ELMHURST, QUEENS, NY – A Connecticut man is facing criminal charges following a crash that killed a dirt bike rider on the Long Island Expressway in Queens, according to the New York Post.
38-year-old Jorge Serrano was arrested for the incident that occurred Saturday morning on the LIE near the Woodhaven Boulevard exit in Elmhurst at about 3 a.m.
Police said Serrano was driving a Chevrolet Cruze westbound when he struck a dirt bike and a moped from behind. The 19-year-old dirt bike rider and the 23-year-old moped rider were both taken to Long Island Jewish Medical Center in Forest Hills. The 19-year-old died at the hospital, while the 23-year-old was in stable condition.
Investigators said Serrano left the scene after the crash but was seen about 40 minutes later in the area of Maspeth Avenue and 61st Street. He was taken into custody there.
Among the charges facing Serrano are vehicular manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident which resulted in death, and DWI. His blood-alcohol content was determined to be near twice the legal limit. Authorities also said he did not have a valid driver’s license.
Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz released a statement that read in part, “As alleged, the defendant ignored the rules of the road with fatal results. From the moment he got behind the wheel of the vehicle while intoxicated and without a valid license, he was a danger to anyone near him.”
