QUEENS, NY – A vehicle caught fire on Monday night after it crashed into a median and a tree, injuring a female passenger and killing the driver.
AM NY reports that the collision occurred at approximately 10:47 p.m. on August 17. A 34-year-old man was driving his 2008 Infiniti west on Jackie Robinson Parkway near Forest Park Drive. Police officers report that the man lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the median. This initial collision sent the car careening off the side of the road. The Infiniti then collided with a nearby tree and caught fire.
A 30-year-old woman riding in the front passenger seat managed to escape from the car after it caught fire. However, the driver was trapped inside the vehicle and unable to escape from the flames. When first responders arrived, they freed the driver from the burning car, but the man had sustained fatal injuries. EMS officials pronounced the driver dead on the scene of the accident.
The passenger sustained injuries from the collision and fire, and she reported back pain after the accident. She was transported to Jamaica Hospital for treatment and observation. Officials report that the woman is currently in stable condition.
At this time, the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad is still working to understand the cause of this single-car collision.
