HAUPPAUGE, LONG ISLAND, NY – A woman has been indicted for an accident on May 23 in Hauppauge that killed a pedestrian, authorities said.
The Suffolk County District Attorney announced charges against 22-year-old Madeline Henriquez of Brentwood.
Prosecutors said Henriquez was driving a Hyundai Elantra at high speed in the area of Motor Parkway and Wicks Road shortly after 10 p.m. when she fatally struck 28-year-old Cherokee Fletcher, who was standing on the corner.
According to the D.A., Henriquez had been out with others earlier in the evening drinking alcohol. She allegedly left the scene and went home to Brentwood after the crash, then had a tow truck pick up the Hyundai the next morning and bring it to another residence in Brentwood for repairs.
“As alleged in the indictment, the recklessly illegal choices this defendant made while behind the wheel tragically took a mother of five away from her children in one instant,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney. “We will seek to ensure that this individual faces justice for her actions.”
Henriquez surrendered on June 2 and is facing multiple charges, including manslaughter, reckless driving, and tampering with physical evidence.
At her arraignment last week, a judge ordered Henriquez held on $35,000 cash/$350,000 bond or $350,000 partially secured bond and suspended her license.
