Alleged drunk driver hits 3 pedestrians on Jackson Heights street corner

JACKSON HEIGHTS, QUEENS, NY – Police said a man who was allegedly driving while intoxicated crashed into three pedestrians on a street corner in Queens early on Saturday morning.

According to WCBS, the victims were three men who were standing in the area of Northern Boulevard and 86th Street in the Jackson Heights section of the borough when the incident happened at about 4:15 a.m.

Investigators determined that the driver of an SUV going west on Northern Boulevard lost control of his vehicle. He crashed into the three men and then collided with a utility pole, in an accident that was captured on surveillance video.

The pedestrians, ages 25, 28, and 32, were all taken to Elmhurst Hospital by EMS crews.  They were initially listed in critical condition, but all three were expected to survive.

The NYPD said that the driver involved was 23-year-old Edilito Piterdo-Rodrigo of the Bronx.  He is facing charges that include DWI and reckless endangerment.

Piterdo-Rodrigo was also injured in the collision and remained at the scene.

The NYPD Collision Investigation Squad is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
