73-year-old man in wheelchair fatally struck by box truck in Far Rockaway, Queens

FAR ROCKAWAY, QUEENS, NY – An elderly man in a wheelchair was fatally struck by a box truck on a street in Queens on Saturday morning, according to WNBC.

The accident took place on Central Avenue near Nameoke Avenue in the Far Rockaway section of the borough at about 9:15 a.m. Surveillance video of the incident showed that the man was trying to cross the street in his wheelchair when the driver of a 2013 International Harvester box truck, who had been stopped at a red light, pulled ahead and struck him. The man was dragged before the vehicle came to a stop.

The 73-year-old victim was pronounced dead after being transported to St. John’s Hospital. His identity was not immediately released.

The 42-year-old driver of the box truck, who stayed at the scene, was taken into custody for driving with a suspended license.

The NYPD Highway Division’s Collision Investigation Squad is continuing its investigation into the incident.
