7 injured, 2 seriously, when car sideswipes SUV in Bay Shore

BAY SHORE, LONG ISLAND, NY – Seven people were taken to the hospital Friday night following an accident involving two vehicles on Long Island, Newsday reports.

Suffolk County police responded to the incident on Fifth Avenue near Reil Place in Bay Shore at about 6:30 p.m.

Investigators said a Mercedes-Benz driven by 20-year-old Mayda Villatoro sideswiped a Kia Sportage SUV as both vehicles were headed south on Fifth Avenue. The Mercedes ended up slamming into a tree.

Villatoro and a front seat passenger, 21-year-old Yaneth Fuentes, were seriously injured. The two women, both Brentwood residents, were transported to South Shore University Hospital. A passenger in the rear seat, Israel Serrano of Bay Shore, was also hospitalized with minor injuries.

The impact of the crash sent the SUV into a nearby wooded area. Four people in the vehicle sustained minor injuries: the driver, 26-year-old Jose Rodriguez of Brentwood; his wife 25-year-old Doris Cabrera; and their two children. All four were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center.

Police impounded the two vehicles for safety checks. No criminal charges were immediately filed.
