BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, NY – A multi-vehicle accident on the Brooklyn Bridge Sunday afternoon left seven people injured and caused major traffic delays, WNBC reports.

The incident took place along the eastbound lanes of the bridge from Manhattan to Brooklyn shortly before 3 p.m., police said.  At least one of the vehicles flipped onto its side.  One of the drivers, a 30-year-old man, was reported to have been ejected from his car and was critically injured.  Paramedics transported him to Bellevue Hospital.

Six other people sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene. Police shut down the eastbound lanes while the wreckage was being cleared and the accident was investigated, and drivers were advised to seek alternate routes.

Traffic was snarled for several hours in both directions before all lanes of the bridge were reopened just before 8 p.m.

The circumstances that led to the wreck were not immediately clear as the NYPD continued its investigation.
