EAST ELMHURST, QUEENS, NY – Police investigating a crash that claimed the life of a child in Queens on Thursday evening, WABC reports.

The NYPD responded to the scene at 100th Street and East McIntosh Street in the East Elmhurst section of the borough after the incident took place at about 5:30 p.m.

Investigators determined that a 5-year-old boy was walking across the street with his father and other family members and was hit by a white Dodge Ram pickup truck as the driver was making a turn.  The group of pedestrians were crossing the street outside a crosswalk at the time, police said.

The boy was pronounced dead after being transported to Elmhurst Hospital.  The driver of the pickup kept going after the crash and is now being sought by authorities.  The victim’s father ran after the driver afterwards but could not stop him.

The NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad is continuing its investigation into the incident, but so far there have been no arrests.  Police said they had identified the driver and were trying to get him to turn himself in.
