QUEENS, NEW YORK, NY – Police said a multi-vehicle accident in Queens early Monday morning left five people injured, WABC reported.
NYPD officers were at the scene on the Belt Parkway in the area of exit 17W and Cohancy Street after the incident took place at about 1:30 a.m.
Investigators said it appeared that two vehicles, an Infiniti and a BMW, were speeding in the westbound lanes and struck two other vehicles that were also headed west. One of the vehicles that was struck, a Honda, went up in flames.
Two 28-year-old woman who were in the Honda and a 56-year-old man in the Subaru were transported to area hospitals, where they were listed in serious but stable condition.
Two men in the BMW, one 25-years-old and the other in his 20s, were listed in critical condition at Jamaica Hospital Police said the driver of the Infiniti fled the scene on foot after the wreck.
Authorities shut down the center and westbound lanes of the Belt Parkway for hours while the scene was being cleared and investigated, causing traffic backups during the morning rush hour.
