STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK, NY – Three teenagers were killed when their car was involved in a crash in the Pleasant Plains section of Staten Island Sunday night, the Staten Island Advance reports.
According to investigators with the NYPD, the driver of a Mustang was going east on Hylan Boulevard at an unsafe speed at about 8:50 p.m. and swerved from the left lane into the right lane at Richard Avenue. A Yukon making a turn from Hyland Boulevard onto Richard Avenue slammed into the driver’s side of the Mustang. The passenger side of the Mustang hit a tree, causing the vehicle to split in two. The front of the Mustang went onto a sidewalk and then struck a tree and a telephone pole.
Two passengers in the Mustang, a 15-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl, died at the scene. A third passenger, a 16-year-old girl, died after being taken to Staten Island University Hospital. The driver of the Mustang, a 16-year-old boy, was transported to the same hospital and was listed in critical but stable condition.
The 47-year-old driver of the Yukon and four passengers, a man, two women and an 11-year-old girl, all were hospitalized with minor injuries. The Yukon driver, 47-year-old Maher Asi-Mahmoud, was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
The NYPD’s Highway Collision Investigation Squad is continuing to investigate the cause of the wreck.
