BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, NY – Police are investigating a hit-and-run crash that killed two women riding to work in Brooklyn Saturday night, reports the New York Post.

The victims were in a Toyota Camry when their vehicle was struck by a BMW that was going at high speed and ran through a red light, police said.  The accident happened at about 11 p.m. at the intersection of Flatlands Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue in East New York.  The driver and a passenger in the BMW fled the scene on foot and the NYPD is now searching for the two men.

The victims were transported to NYC Health and Hospitals/Kings County, where they were pronounced dead. They were identified as 58-year-old Nerlye Stvil of Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, who was driving the Camry, and her passenger, 51-year-old Sandra Liberice of Flatlands.

Relatives said the two women were headed to their jobs at a group home for the mentally disabled at the time of the crash. Stvil’s niece Joanne Morales told a reporter for WABC, “”She’s working hard, working hard, you know, to provide for herself, her family,” she said. “And for her to just lose her life, all of a sudden? Like this?”

Police were attempting to speak to witnesses and gather surveillance video that might produce clues in the case.  The NYPD’s Highway Collision Squad is continuing its investigation.

A spokesman for the home where the women worked, Services for the UnderServed on Barbey Street in East New York, released a statement that read in part, “Sandra Liberice and Nerlye Styil have braved the threat of COVID-19 for the last nine months to continue to be of service to others as essential workers, and have now lost their lives because of someone else’s thoughtless and reckless act.”
