LONG ISLAND CITY, QUEENS, NY – Police said a collision involving an all terrain vehicle in Queens Friday morning left two men dead, according to a report by WABC.
The two were riding an ATV in the area of Queens Plaza South and Jackson Avenue in Long Island City when the incident took place at about 1:40 a.m.
The NYPD said the ATV crashed into the side of an 18-wheeler. The riders may have been going the wrong way at the time, investigators said.
One of the riders was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. The other died after being transported to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. One of the victims was identified as 22-year-old Angel Lopez of the Bronx, while the identity of other victim has not yet been released. Neither of the two was wearing a helmet.
The driver of the semi was not injured in the crash and remained at the scene.
According to amNewYork, two NYPD officers were placed on modified duty pending an investigation into whether the two officers were chasing the ATV riders just prior to the fatal crash.
Police shut down Jackson Avenue at the Ed Koch/59th Street Bridge for the accident investigation, which remains ongoing by the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad.
