OYSTER BAY, LONG ISLAND – New York State Police are investigating a deadly crash that occurred in Nassau County Friday night.
In a news release, police said the incident took place on the Southern State Parkway eastbound in Oyster Bay. A preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of a 2018 Subaru moved from the center lane into the right lane just west of exit 32 and collided with the side of a 2004 Honda Civic that was traveling in the right lane.
The Subaru spun sideways, flipped onto the driver’s side, and ended up against brush and trees. The Honda hit an electric box, kept going and crashed into a traffic camera pole.
The driver of the Honda, 18-year-old Ciara Hare of Lindenhurst, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two passengers in her vehicle were taken to Nassau University Medical Center in critical condition.
The driver of the Subaru, 27-year-old Matthew Whyte of Laurelton, was taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Collision Reconstruction Unit and Forensic Identification Unit investigated at the crash scene. Anyone with further information on the crash was asked to contact the State Police.
