ISLIP, LONG ISLAND, NY – A teenager is facing drunk driving charges following a crash in Islip that killed one pedestrian and injured another, Newsday reports.
The accident occurred on Christmas Day in front of an apartment building on Union Boulevard near Johnston Drive. Police said an 18-year-old was driving a Honda Pilot SUV at about 2:44 p.m. when the vehicle went off the road and hit the two pedestrians. The driver also struck a parked car, a pedestrian crossing sign and a tree.
One of the victims, identified as 67-year-old Luis Trujillo of Islip, was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman who was walking with him, 47-year-old Veronica Deleon of Brentwood, was seriously injured and transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore.
The driver, a Bay Shore resident, was taken to the same hospital, and was then charged with driving while intoxicated. He was arraigned Sunday in First District Court. His name was not released because he was charged with a misdemeanor, police said.
The SUV was impounded as part of the police investigation.
