BRONX, NY – An 18 wheeler overturned on the New England Thruway and fell onto the Hutchinson River Parkway late Friday evening, necessitating the closure of both lanes of traffic as emergency responders treated the driver and cleared the wreck. The driver suffered only minor injuries, and was taken to Jacobi Hospital for treatment.
Police say the driver lost control of his vehicle at around 11:30 pm and plowed head-first onto the lower roadway, crushing the cab and leaving the trailer suspended at an angle from the Thruway above. Despite the dramatic nature of the accident, no other motorists were injured.
Filing a Lawsuit Following a Trucking Accident
Trucking is an enormous industry in the United States; more than 70% of all goods are transported on trucks, which accounted for 10.8 billion tons of freight in 2017 alone. The average trucker logs more than 100,000 miles a year transporting this freight, often working long hours under tight deadlines and considerable stress. This, coupled with the size of the vehicles they drive, can put their fellow motorists at risk for injury or worse. In 2017, nearly 5,000 trucks and buses were involved in fatal accidents.
Common causes of injuries related to truck accidents include:
- Distracted or tired driving
- Improperly secured load
- Failure to maintain safe following distance
