1 driver killed, 1 seriously injured in wrong-way crash on LIE service road

MELVILLE, LONG ISLAND, NY – Authorities said a driver going in the wrong direction was killed in a collision in Suffolk County last week, according to a report by Newsday.

The accident took place late Thursday night in the vicinity of Express Drive South and Maxess Road in Melville at about 11:15 p.m. Suffolk County police said 56-year-old Marie Louis drove a Honda Civic west in the eastbound lanes of Express Drive South, a Long Island Expressway service road. The Civic then crashed head-on into a Mercedes-Benz GLC that was heading east.

Louis, a North Amityville resident, died after being taken to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow.  The other driver, 61-year-old Venetia Atkinson from North Baldwin, was seriously injured and transported to the same hospital.

Police impounded both vehicles as part of their investigation into the fatal wreck.
