Importance of Properly Securing Loads

A North Carolina teenager is dead after an accident between a pickup truck and a logging truck on November 28th, 2017. The high school sophomore was being driven to school by his father when the incident occurred. The pickup truck struck the back of the larger vehicle, dislodging a log, which went through the windshield of the trailing vehicle.

Initial reports do not indicate which driver was at fault for the collision, but even making that determination will not paint the full picture of who was responsible for the teenager’s death. The crash occurred at an intersection, at comparatively low speeds, and these types of accidents are rarely fatal. In this situation, it was the improperly secured log that resulted in the young man’s death. Had the cargo been properly tied down, with straps sufficient to hold it in place even in the event of an accident, the young man would likely still be alive. Sadly, this type of thing happens all the time, and it only makes the news when something terrible happens.

Truckers must take seriously the process of stowing and securing cargo. Too often things are done quickly and shoddily in order to get on the road. When corners are cut, people get hurt. In this situation, it’s possible the trucker did everything he or she should make things safe, but a full investigation is certainly warranted.

If you or someone you love has been injured in an accident involving a large vehicle such as a semi or a tractor-trailer, understanding all the different components that go into making those vehicles so prone to accidents is important. Please, consult with an experienced attorney regarding the details of your case, and make sure you pursue every lead in determining precisely what went wrong.
