Driving Near a Golf Course? Watch for Errant Balls

Golfers are afforded some of the most beautiful landscape and property on which to play golf when they engage in their daily or weekly round. Many of these beautiful courses are situated near busy streets, where passers-by can also indulge in the beauty even if they are not golfers themselves. In a car, are you protected from any flying balls that may come in your direction? Whose fault its it when something like this occurs?

For many who live on golf course, those property owners assume the risk of living near a course. They can‘t be expected to believe that all golfers are going to hit a straight shot toward the pin. Homes are built within a reasonable distance so that the ball of an average golfer won’t go astray. But, as we’ve seen even among professionals, the ball doesn’t always go where it’s intended. A courteous golfer will offer to help with the compensation if there is property damage or if someone is injured.

In situations where the golf balls flies far off the beaten path toward traffic, the investigation might not be so clear-cut. A golf ball coming toward a vehicle on a busy highway or road can cause more than just damage to the car; it can cause a severe accident if the driver has to swerve to avoid being hit by the flying white ball. Are there steps that can be taken to avoid this type of injury?

  • As we always remind drivers and passengers—be alert! If you are driving by a golf course, be sure to stay alert for any stray golf balls. Pay attention to the road.
  • Avoid taking part in other distractions when you are driving by beautiful scenery or a golf course. If you want to take a photo, pull over so you can do that instead of taking the photo while you are behind the wheel.
  • All vehicles should have up to date insurance in case of an accident.
  • Pull over if you are hit and if you have time to do so, until the golfer can come your way and work with you to settle.

If you have been involved in a traffic accident that was the cause of an errant golf ball or other distraction, the injury could have come suddenly, and caused many to be shaken up. Be sure to explain what you were doing and where you were when the errant ball came your way. And, be sure to enlist the support and advice of a reputable attorney who can work with you to settle your case.
