Toxicity in the Wake of Hurricane Harvey
September 07, 2017 | Finz & Finz, P.C.
By now everyone has seen images of the devastating flooding in Houston as a result of Hurricane Harvey. A city of millions of people was rendered practically uninhabitable by the forces of Mother Nature. At least 40 were killed and hundreds of thousands left homeless.
But as the city begins to put itself back together, residents and governments must be mindful of the ecological fallout of what occurred, particularly with regards to local refineries and other manufacturers. The flood waters of the storm compromised generators and cooling systems, resulting in chemical explosions and the release of dangerous substances into the air and water supply.
Already, environmental watchdogs have identified dangerous chemicals that have been released by factories affected by Hurricane Harvey. These chemicals release dangerous substances including:
- Carbon monoxide
- Nitrogen oxide
- Sulfur dioxide
Side effects of exposure to these chemicals can include cancer and respiratory distress. In some cases, it can take years for diseases to develop as a result of toxic exposure, and anyone in the Houston area should be prepared to self-monitor for symptoms, and should speak with a physician about the potential harmful effects of these substances.
Another potential complication of Hurricane Harvey is the Superfund sites in the area. Superfund sites contain large amounts of dangerous chemicals and pollutants with the intention of keeping people from being affected. But with the significant amount of water in the area, these pollutants could be washed into the groundwater or otherwise exposed.
If you or someone you love has suffered due to exposure to pollutants, knowing how to proceed can be difficult. As your medical bills mount, trying to fight the businesses that were responsible for the exposure can be overwhelming. Please, speak with an attorney with the skill and experience to stand up to these companies and get you the compensation to which you are entitled.
