Tornado Accidents Plague All Areas of the Country

The month of May is considered prime time in tornado season, evident by the massive and destructive tornados which hit the mid-west and plain states over the weekend. Tornados in Oklahoma may be common, but residents of the town of Wray, Colorado, were stunned when an EF2 tornado measuring a half a mile wide caused severe damage to the small town about 170 miles east of Denver.

The severe weather system that caused at least 15 tornados, golf ball-size hail, and brutal winds began its reign of terror Saturday and is expected to continue through today. In all, 11 states from Arizona to Illinois could be affected by this most recent batch of harsh storms.

While the Northeast is not in the forecasted path of this dangerous weather front, the area is not immune to tornados. The humidity in mid to late summer makes the atmosphere more susceptible to tornados, with an average of ten a year in New York State. Looking at data from 2010 – 2012, eight tornados touched down from the Bronx to Suffolk County, all occurring from late July to mid-September. Residents of Sunset Park and Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, are well aware of summer tornados as they felt the brunt of the strongest twister to strike the five boroughs, an EF2 tornado that passed through on the morning of August 8, 2007.

Tornados are not limited to one area of the country anymore. Any structural damage to homes, buildings and roads as the result of a tornado are accidents just waiting to happen if not addressed immediately.
