(NEW YORK, December 2019) - A cyclist who was hit by a cab driver in a hit-and-run accident on the Upper West Side will require significant rehabilitation, according to the New York Daily News. The victim, 38-year-old Elliot Betances was stopped at a red light at 12:50 a.m. on Monday at W. 110th Street when a cab, driven by 55-year-old Karamjit Singh hit him from behind.
The cab driver continued on, even though it was noticeable that he'd hit someone, according to a passenger in the cab at the time. The passenger looked back and saw Betances and his bike on the ground, and begged Singh to stop, but he refused and kept driving. According to the Daily News, another cab driver who was stopped at the same light, pursued Singh's cab for blocks, eventually cutting him off. Singh eventually returned to the scene about 20 minutes later, where he was arrested.
According to the victim's father, Daniel Betances, Elliot's injuries required more than nine hours of surgery at Mount Sinai St. Luke's Hospital. He will reportedly need to spend six to twelve months in a wheelchair for recovery from a broken pelvis, before he can begin rehabilitation.
His father told the Daily News:
"It’s going to take major rehabilitation before he can have a normal life.”
The Taxi and Limousine Commission suspended Singh's license (he's been active since 2000), and he was charged with leaving the scene of an accident without reporting serious physical injury and assault. Authorities say that Singh remains held on $10,000 bail
