Cause of Pool Accidents Not Always Evident

Of the four people who entered the Durham, North Carolina pool just after midnight on June 19th, 2018, only one emerged alive, and police are questioning the survivor in hopes of determining precisely what was responsible for the deaths of the three others. The three bodies were discovered floating in the apartment complex pool by residents at approximately 3:30 am.

Though pool deaths involving young children who are unable to swim are among the most common pool accidents, teenagers and adults also pass away in the pool, though inability to swim is rarely the cause. When people eight years of age or older are killed, it is usually due to one of three factors, including:

  • Electrocution
  • Gas leak
  • Use of alcohol or drugs

All three of these are potential factors in the Durham incident. Electrocution can occur in a variety of ways, but is usually the result of nearby faulty wiring. Gas leaks can occur anywhere, and certain gases can have dangerous reactions with the chlorine used in pools. Alcohol and drugs can render strong swimmers temporarily unable to save themselves.

Residents of the apartment complex are pressing the police for answers, wanting to know whether they were at risk using the facilities, or whether their children might be at risk when the pool reopens. But so far, the police are at a loss to explain the cause of the accident.

If you or someone you love has been injured or killed in a pool accident, you know all too well how difficult it can be to wait for answers. If you suspect negligence played a role in the accident, please consult with an experienced attorney regarding your case.
