Snow, Ice and Freezing Temperatures are a Recipe for Accidents

December 15, 2016 | Finz & Finz, P.C.

The official start of winter is not until December 21, but New York City is already dealing with below freezing temperatures and even lower wind chill numbers. While New Yorkers are concerned with trying to stay warm, they also need to focus on the dangerous conditions this type of weather brings, whether they are on the road or on the sidewalk.

Arctic air out of the North West has sent temperatures plummeting. Snow flurries and a wintry mix are in the forecast for the next few days. Slippery conditions are expected, which can lead to a number of different types of accidents. Just this morning a leaking fire hydrant created an icy patch on a Queens road. A truck hauling a crane slid on the ice and wound up overturned on the side of the road. Drivers need to pay extra attention, even if there is only a thin layer of moisture on the pavement. With high temperatures not reaching 30 degrees, slick conditions occur more easily, increasing the chances of a motor vehicle accident.

The situation is not much better for pedestrians when it comes to this type of weather. When sidewalks and walkways freeze, a slip and fall accident is likely to occur. Property owners and municipalities are responsible for keeping these areas clear and safe. This also includes slow removal. Once again, even a light dusting of snow or drizzling rain can create ice patches. When several inches of snow fall, it is imperative to keep pathways clear not only so people do not have to trek through snow, but that they can see any obstructions or defects on sidewalks that may cause them to trip and fall

We are entering a dangerous time of year weather-wise. Accidents will happen, and Mother Nature may not be the one to blame. If you or someone you love has been injured as due to an accident in this cold and sometimes treacherous weather conditions, please call the skilled and experienced lawyers at the Finz firm to find those responsible for your pain and suffering and help you recover the compensation you deserve.
