Back to School Checklist for Avoiding Accidents

With Labor Day Weekend behind us, children in the tristate area are back in school, and drivers need to take notice. The increase of school buses on the road, children walking or riding their bicycles to school, and teenage drivers taking part in the morning rush, means it is vital for motorists and parents to pay extra attention to ensure everyone stays safe.

According to the National Safety Council, children ages 4-7 walking to school account for the highest number of deaths involving bus accidents. Plus, children are struck by vehicles near schools more than any other location throughout the country. To reduce the risk of an accident, parents dropping off children should avoid double-parking or leaving children across the street from where they need to be. Motorists must obey all traffic laws involving buses, school zones and crossing guards. Look out for children who may dart out into the street by schools and playgrounds.

The National Safety Council also reports that the number of accidents involving teenage drivers rises drastically in the month of September. Aside from having to focus on getting to school on time, the inexperienced drivers are sharing the road with more cars and must resist the urge to either talk or text on their phones while behind the wheel in an effort to avoid an accident.

We must all work together during this busy time of year to avoid any type of accident involving school children. A back to school safety checklist is available on the National Safety Council’s website. If your child has been injured in a school bus accident or in a motor vehicle accident while on the way to or from school, it can be a difficult period both emotionally and financially.
