Minor Injuries Become Major Issues with RSD

Ask a person suffering with RSD about the injury that brought on the condition and you may be surprised by the answer. Many times the chronic pain associated with RSD does not originate from a major traumatic incident, but living with RSD can be traumatic indeed.

RSD stands for Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy and is also known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome or CRPS. RSD occurs when there is nerve damage in a specific area of the body due to an injury, causing the nerves to misfire and send constant pain signals to the brain. The pain stemming from RSD is much more intense than the original injury (which can be anything from a small fracture to minor surgery to a simple bone bruise). The onset of RSD can occur a month after the injury to a year later, and is commonly misdiagnosed since it is such a rare condition. This puts patients at a disadvantage since the earlier RSD is diagnosed, the better the chance of being able to manage symptoms and prevent them from spreading to other parts of the body.

While RSD may not affect a large number of people, the affect it has on those who suffer from can be life changing. Those with RSD deal with chronic, intense pain along with swelling and discoloration of the skin. It has been measured as the most painful form of chronic pain and even more painful than cancer. The skin is so sensitive that even the slightest touch is excruciating. Many patients with RSD say pain killers do not help with the burning, aching, unrelenting pain. Any type of stress only increases the pain.

Unfortunately there is no direct test to diagnose RSD, nor is there a cure. Men and women who live with RSD may not be able to continue working and can become physically and mentally exhausted, which can lead to depression.
