More Product Recalls Affecting the Safety of Children

July 22, 2016 | Finz & Finz, P.C.

Parents were alarmed last month when IKEA issued a voluntary recall on furniture that could fall and trap children underneath, potentially killing them. This month has seen two recalls on children’s products that parents need to be aware of as well. They involve a baby monitor with the potential to overheat and water bottles that could possibly have lead contamination.

Canadian company Lorex Technologies has recalled 34,000 of their Care ‘N’ Share video baby monitors sold throughout the U.S. and Canada at Babies “R” Us, Target, Walmart, amazon.com and other retailers. Lorax received nearly 500 complaints from customers who reported problems with the batteries overheating. When the batteries overheat they can swell or expand, causing the cover to pop off. This leaves a burning hazard in the form of a hot, exposed battery. Lorax and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) are instructing customers to stop using the monitors immediately and to contact the company for a refund.

Meanwhile, retailer L.L. Bean is recalling a number of insulated water bottles for children. The Maine based company specifically requested lead-free bottles, but the manufacturer in China used a seal on the outside bottom of the bottles which contained lead. The CPCS says the 13.5 ounce bottles, costing around $20, come in five different designs and were sold from July 2015 through May 2016. Consumers who purchased the bottles are being asked to stop using them and contact L.L. Bean for a refund.
