Chain-Reaction Crash in Brooklyn Injures Four, Including One Pedestrian

October 10, 2019 | Finz & Finz, P.C.

Four people were injured in a crash in Brooklyn on Monday afternoon. According to CBS2 New York, the collision occurred at 54th Street and Fourth Avenue in Sunset Park at around 2:30 p.m.

Eyewitnesses reported that the driver of a red Chevrolet car may have run a red light and collided with a white van, causing a chain-reaction crash involving other vehicles. It was also reported that a pedestrian was also struck in the accident and was thrown in the air by the impact.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash, and it is not known at this time if any citations were issued at the scene.

Pedestrian Accidents: What Are the Most Commonly-Reported Injuries?

While any auto accident could potentially cause severe injuries to the people involved, pedestrians are at higher risk of suffering catastrophic or fatal injuries than the occupants of vehicles. Some of the most common kinds of injuries pedestrians suffer include:

Broken bones and fractures – The impact of a collision or being thrown to the ground can cause bones to fracture or break. Arm and leg injuries are particularly common in car crashes.

Cuts and lacerations – Sharp edges or shards of glass can easily cause deep cuts or lacerations. It is crucial for victims to treat these injuries promptly, particularly if there is a need for stitches and continuing medical attention to make sure that the wounds don’t become infected.

Internal injuries – The force of impact can cause severe damage to internal organs when a car strikes a pedestrian. Rib injuries, internal bleeding, brain bleeds, and other serious harm can be difficult to detect in the aftermath of an accident but must be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible.

Pelvic injuries – Because the average car hood typically will align with an adult’s mid-section, pelvic injuries happen frequently in car and pedestrian accidents.

Sprains, strains, and soft-tissue injuries – Because collisions happen suddenly and without warning, pedestrians often suffer injuries as they try to avoid being hit or might suffer other injuries when they are thrown to the ground. While not as serious as the other injuries on the list, they can be painful and could require medical attention to treat appropriately.
