Health Department Informs Restaurant Patrons of Possible Hepatitis A Exposure

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services (SCDHS) has reached out to the public in an effort to find anyone who visited a Farmingdale restaurant in July due to a possible exposure to Hepatitis A. An assistant bartender/waitress worked at the restaurant on five different days before she began to show symptoms and ultimately tested positive for the disease.
The bartender helped place garnishes on hundreds of drinks during her shifts on July 19, 23, 26, 29 and 30 at Trento, a restaurant located on Route 110 in Farmingdale, NY. It was only after that time that she began to exhibit symptoms, including nausea, fever and diarrhea. As a result, the SCDHS offered free vaccines and preventative treatment to patrons and staff who were exposed on the last two days. The reason for treatment only related to exposure from the 29th or 30th is that there is just a two week period in which these methods will be effective. Anyone at the restaurant on the previous three dates should visit their doctor if they experience Hepatitis A symptoms such as fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, fever and a yellowing of the skin.
Hepatitis A is a virus that causes inflammation of liver. It is the least severe of the most common types of Hepatitis in the U.S. and is spread by consuming food or water which was handled by an infected person. Symptoms will most likely occur within a month of exposure, but in some cases it can take up to six weeks. Once a person has recovered from the effects of the illness, there is no permanent damage to the liver. Anyone vaccinated for Hepatitis A, as well as anyone who was previously diagnosed, is protected from becoming sick again. The SCDHS recently released a health bulletin on all types of Hepatitis to correlate with World Hepatitis Day which was on July 28.
After the incident with the bartender at his restaurant, the owner of Trento was devastated and apologized to everyone involved since his employee was not exhibiting any signs of being sick when she was working. In addition, County Health Commissioner Dr. James Tomarken reported that the restaurant was inspected and found all-clear. In addition, no employees or customers have become ill. While the owner of Trento showed concern for his clientele and staff, not all business and property owners work in the same way.
