Distractions Outside of the Car Can Prove Deadly

January 28, 2014 | Finz & Finz, P.C.

We often think of distractions on the road that occur in the car when we are driving.  After all, a distraction is anything that takes our attention away from where we need to be at the time.  Driving distractions include cell phones, texting, children in the backseat, GPS devices and other forms of communication come your way while in the car.  But, distractions on the road also come in the forms of road signs, movie marquees, other accidents, amusements on the roadway, and other roadway sights and events that demand our attention.

No matter how hard we try to stay focused in any given situation, we find that our attention span can only last so long.   Unfortunately, when we are diving, the main thing that should hold our attention is the road and the traffic. As we drive, particularly in unfamiliar locations, we want to take in all the sights around us.  We see marquees with information that we want to read.  We see fairs and events off to the side of the main highway.  We see other drivers doing things that make us angry or sad and, as a result, we pay attention to everything except the road.

When we find that we are confronted with sights we want to see in an unfamiliar venue, it’s best to do the following:

  • It bears repeating:  No matter where you are or what you are doing, pay attention to the road.
  • Keeping your eyes on the straight and narrow means that you should have someone else in the passenger seat helping with navigation.  It’s too easy to be distracted when you take it all on yourself.
  • If you use a GPS (global positioning system) be sure you ask others to refrain from talking so you can hear the commands of the GPS.  This keeps your eyes on the road, so you don't have to look at the directions on the GPS screen.
  • Knowing your route ahead of time is another suggestion so you can become familiar with where you are going before you start on your journey.

Roadside distractions are tempting and we have the need to know everything that is coming our way.  Enlisting in help from other passengers will make sure you keep your eyes on the road.

If you have been injured in a car accident or know someone who has been injured, you will want to seek the assistance of an attorney who can handle a personal injury case with ease and confidence.
