Medical Malpractice Birth Injury: First World Problems

December 09, 2014 | Finz & Finz, P.C.

Overall, Americans have it pretty good.  We live in one of the richest countries in the world, and we have options available to us on a daily basis that people in the developing world can barely even imagine.  We have fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats at the grocery store and thousands of hours of television programming on cable or through internet streaming.

With all the wonderful aspects of American life, it is almost unimaginable that there might be things available in “third world” countries that aren’t available in our supposedly “first world” nation.  But on very rare occasions, we discover that there are some advantages to be found in unexpected places.

A recent report on midwives in Tanzania focused on efforts to combine traditional midwifery and modern technology to reduce the infant mortality rate.  One of the major breakthroughs came when local hospitals installed “resuscitation monitors” in all the delivery rooms.  These devices monitor fetal heartbeat and Co2 levels, drastically reducing the incidence of stillbirth.  The collected data is used by researchers to determine even better methods to reduce infant mortality.

Properly monitoring the health of an unborn child is incredibly important, yet despite its magnitude many American hospitals and doctors continue to make unnecessary mistakes, especially in regards to making sure the child is receiving an adequate amount of oxygen.  Lack of oxygen can lead directly to a variety of problems, including:

  • Brain damage
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Paralysis
  • Hearing loss
  • Death

If your child suffered injury due to fetal oxygen deprivation, it is important that the cause of the tragedy be fully investigated.  Hospitals and doctors cannot be depended upon to be completely honest with you, and having an ally who knows what questions to ask is incredibly important.  Please, contact a qualified attorney to be the ally you need!
