Owners Held Responsible for Dog Bites

Dogs are known as man’s best friend. And for the most part, they are. Coming home to the family dog greeting you with love and excitement can be wonderful. Sadly, some dogs are raised to be aggressive, or they are not cared for properly by their owners, causing more behavioral issues. When these dogs are not supervised or let loose in the streets, it becomes scary and dangerous for anyone who is confronted and attacked by these animals.
Just recently, two brothers in Westbury, NY, were arrested in connection with a vicious attack by their two dogs on a 9-year-boy walking home from school in January. The boy sustained dog bites so severe that officials say he almost did not survive. The dogs’ owners were charged on a number of counts including reckless endangerment and assault.
Apparently the men arrested knew the violent behavior at least one of the dogs was capable of, as the animal had previously attacked an adult and two other dogs over a three-month period. Instead of keeping a closer watch over the animals and ensuring the dogs would not be able to leave the property, the owners simply let the dogs back into the yard they had escaped from so many times before.
Owning a dog is a major responsibility that should not be taken lightly. In many cases an aggressive dog is the product of the way it has been treated by its owner. Dog owners have an obligation to know the behavior and personality of their canine. If there is a history of aggression or any indication that a dog could potentially bite someone, a dog owner must do everything to ensure the animal, in no way, comes in contact with adults, children or other animals.
Dogs are a part of everyday life for so many Americans. The physical pain and psychological trauma suffered by a person attacked and bitten by a dog can last a lifetime.
