Decorations Can Be Distracting for Drivers

There are many reasons people decorate their homes for Christmas. For some it is simply an expression of the joy of the season. For others, the hanging of the lights and decorations is a family tradition that bonds people closer together. And for some, the goal is to attract attention to their ostentatious displays.
Businesses also have their reasons for decorating for the holidays. In many cases, failing to do so risks alienating customers who expect holiday cheer when they are shopping. For some business owners, it is an expression of personal conviction. And for some businesses, as for some people, the goal is to attract attention, hoping the extra attention translates to extra shoppers.
In most cases, such decorations are harmless, but there are times when decorations can become a dangerous distraction to drivers, including:
- Bright lights or fast moving lights in the visual field of drivers, which risk blinding or otherwise causing a major distraction
- Large decorations that obscure traffic, turns, or traffic lights
- Intermittently moving decorations in peripherals that might cause drivers to look away from the road
Businesses should be aware of the potential dangers of certain types of decorations, but drivers must also take responsibility. Too many drivers allow themselves to be distracted by decorations instead of keeping their attention on the road and their hands on the steering wheel.
If you or someone you love has been injured or killed in an accident, and you suspect distracted driving played a role, finding the source of the distraction is important. Whether distracted by something on the side of the road, or by the cell phone on the seat next to them, distracted driving is unsafe and unacceptable. Please consult with an experienced attorney regarding your case.
