Defective Drugs: An Aspirin A Day

October 21, 2014 | Finz & Finz, P.C.

You rarely hear or read about it, but it seriously affects the health and welfare of thousands and thousands of Americans.  It can have almost no symptoms, and yet lurk in your system just waiting for the worst possible time for a clot to break free.  It can cause stroke or even death.  And for too long, the only treatments for deep vein thrombosis have carried very high risks.

New research out of Australia is wonderful news for those who suffer from this potentially devastating illness.  Doctors have discovered that aspirin, long an unassuming mainstay of heart disease treatment, might have similar effects for those with deep vein thrombosis.  This shouldn’t be surprising, as the mechanism for treatment should be similar for both diseases.

Pharmaceutical companies and doctors have made millions of dollars off of treating DVT in other, more risky ways.  The normal drug treatments for deep vein thrombosis include the following possible side effects:

  • Coumadin: nausea, loss of appetite, stomach/abdominal pain, a significantly increased chance of severe bleeding
  • Pradaxa: significant increase in chances of severe bleeding, severe allergic reaction
  • Eliquis: significant increase in chances of severe bleeding, damage to internal organs
  • Heparin: significant increase in chances of severe bleeding, brittle bones

With the seriousness of the side effects, the possibility that this potentially deadly disease could be treated with less risk is exciting.  Unfortunately, it is difficult to trust that doctors will make the right call, considering how many people might never have suffered from DVT in the first place with proper medical care.

If you or a loved one suffers from deep vein thrombosis, it can be difficult to understand just how it happened to you.  To get those answers, you need someone with the proper experience in asking the right questions.  Contact an experienced attorney who can guide you to the information you need to make informed choices for your future.
