DePuy Hip Replacement: Two Out of Three is Very Bad

divider

Depuy Orthopedics has been under increasing scrutiny the last few years, as more and more of the products it develops have faced recall. The Depuy Attune Knee system faced a recall after it failed to properly adhere to bone, resulting in failed knee replacements and significant pain for those who received the procedure. Depuy hip replacements have faced recall as well, but for different reasons.

Any early failure of a joint replacement carries additional risk factors, as surgery always carries risks, but the problems associated with Depuy hip replacements and resurfacings are more significant. These devices have been associated with bone deterioration in the area of the replacement. Bone deterioration is extremely problematic because it decreases the chance of future procedures being successful in restoring the function of the hip.

The issue arises with two out of the three hip orthopedic systems offered by Depuy, with only the Pinnacle hip system not facing recall, and the ASR and ASR XL Acetabular systems determined to be problematic. At issue is a design flaw that results in metal grinding on metal, releasing small metal shavings into the body which wear down the joint both directly and through increased inflammation.

Whenever a design flaw is at fault for orthopedic system failure, it is clear that the manufacturer did not perform due diligence to ensure the safety of the product. Instead, profits were prioritized over the health of patients. Such reckless disregard should be penalized.

If you or someone you love received a hip replacement, and the device failed earlier than would be expected, or did additional damage to the joint, please consider reaching out to an attorney regarding your case. Dangerous devices will continue to be aggressively marketed so long as there is profit in doing so.
