Choosing the Right Babysitter: Avoiding An Accident

February 17, 2014 | Finz & Finz, P.C.

We have all heard the horror stories about daycare abuse and injuries. As a result, some of us have resorted to having an in-home babysitter instead of putting our kids in the hands of a center who has to watch several children at one time. While using our neighbor or best friend may seem like a viable and trustworthy solution, you may want to think twice.

Nannies and caretakers around the country make a wonderful living by caring for the children of others. Various states have regulations when it comes to daycares such as how many are allowed in the center, location of the daycare, the type of licensure required, and other standards of regulation. Your first step is to do a little bit of research regarding licensed daycares in your state and town.  Next, you will want to pay attention the following checklist:

  • Ask any and all questions about the care provider including how many kids will be in their care, what type of licenses they possess, and how long they have be in the business.
  • Check the Better Business Bureau and state board to see if there have been any reports or disciplinary action at that center.
  • Ask for referrals from the care provider; if they are willing to give referrals that maybe be a sign they have nothing to hide.  If they are reluctant, that may be a red flag for you.
  • If you are seeking a one time babysitter for an evening out with your spouse, find out if the babysitter has taken any care giving classes, or whether he or show knows CPR.
  • Have you noticed any attention deficits on the part of the caretaker?  Is that person texting, talking, and turning away instead of paying attention the children?
  • Teenagers need jobs, and many are capable of caretaking. Enlist that person in a class so they can learn how to care for your kids.

While not everyone can afford to put their children in a daycare center, we know that it is one of the necessities for many working parents.  Knowing that your child is in the best hands by doing your own homework to make sure that the person caring for your child is your first best course of action.
