After an Accident: When Further Injury and Harm Can Occur
February 27, 2017 | Finz & Finz, P.C.
An accident in Houston early in the morning on February 25th turned deadly after shots were fired. A mother was was driving home with her 8-year-old daughter when her car was t-boned at an intersection. The mother did not have time to determine the extent of her injuries, or those of her daughter before several bullets were shot into her vehicle, killing her child, an Honors student at a local elementary school.
Many drivers assume that once the accident has occurred, the worst is over. But incidents like this shooting remind us that there are still many scenarios that can happen even after the initial collision. These factors include:
- Road rage incidents, where one of the individuals involved in the accident becomes violent
- Chain-reaction accidents, where cars following behind the initial accident also collide
- Accidents where one of the drivers of the cars involved in the initial accident is struck while exiting their vehicle
If you are involved in an accident, do not assume that you are safe immediately following the collision. There are a variety of factors that can cause unsafe conditions in these circumstances. The best practice you can do is remain calm and wait for the police to arrive. Engaging the other driver is risky. These potential issues are more likely than most people realize. Remember, cops are at risk every time they pull over a driver because the driver might act irrationally to avoid going to jail. People act erratically in stressful situations.
If you are in a car accident, remain calm and minimize your contact with the other driver. Do not speak with the other driver or their insurance company. Let the police do their jobs. If you are unsure how to proceed, contact an experienced attorney who can help you hold the other party accountable for their actions that led to the accident occurring.
