Portable Brain Scanners to Become More Ubiquitous

March 04, 2019 | Finz & Finz, P.C.

After a fall, accident, or other traumatic event, determining whether or not long-term damage to the brain occurred is important.  Though there are a variety of imaging techniques currently available for this diagnostic purpose, most of them require a significant investment in time and space for the patient and the hospital.  Portable brain scanners hope to change that.

Brain injuries can occur in many different ways.  One of the most common forms of brain injury occurs when an anoxic/hypoxic event happens during the birthing process.  These events can be triggered in a variety of ways, including:

  • Strangulation caused by the umbilical cord
  • The umbilical cord becoming twisted
  • Medical error

When anoxia occurs, the child usually shows signs of distress, including a high probability of changes in heartrate.  Upon recognizing these signs, a doctor can swiftly intervene and often prevent brain damage from occurring.  In many cases, it takes more than a minute of oxygen deprivation for brain damage to occur, though damage can occur much faster.

Determining whether or not brain damage occurred due to an anoxic event can be difficult.  Just as with other forms of brain injury, an imaging scan is often required to confirm damage to the brain.  The new portable brain scanners could be very useful to parents who are afraid their child may have suffered an anoxic event, and can also be useful to medical practitioners wishing to allay the fears parents may have that brain damage occurred.

If your child suffered an anoxic event during the birthing process, and the medical team did not swiftly intervene to minimize the risk of brain damage, please consider consulting with an experienced attorney.  A qualified lawyer will guide you through the process of demonstrating that the doctors and nurses let you and your child down by not quickly addressing the anoxic event.
