Bicycle Accidents: A Model Case

November 25, 2014 | Finz & Finz, P.C.

Being pretty is no protection.  Some people seem to lead charmed lives, as if nothing can ever go wrong for them.  They are rich and attractive.  They have good jobs and wonderful friends.  They have beautiful spouses and take wonderful vacations around the world.  But none of these things offer protection against bad things happening to any of us.

A model and former contestant on a reality television show seemed to live a charmed life.  She had everything any woman could ever want.  But while bicycling along the busy streets of New York City she was just as vulnerable as anybody else.  The young woman was struck by a bus while bicycling home on Roosevelt Island.  She is in critical condition.

No matter how safe we might feel, bad things can happen at any time.  No one is completely protected from bad luck.  Because of this, it is important that we do everything we can to keep ourselves safe, especially while bicycling or walking.  Cyclists and pedestrians are particularly vulnerable to serious injury.  While riding your bike always be certain to:

  • Wear a helmet that meets safety standards and fits properly
  • Follow the rules of the road, particularly in regards to maintaining position in the bike lane
  • Keep an eye out for traffic signs and other obstructions
  • Ride with the flow of traffic

Even doing all of these things won’t guarantee safety.  Nothing can guarantee safety.  Sometimes, bad things happen to good people and there is nothing we could have done to prevent them.  There’s no such thing as a completely charmed life.  If you or a loved one has been injured in a bicycle accident, contact a qualified attorney to help you get the care and compensation you need to recover from your injuries.
