Long Weekends and Holiday Travel: What You Need to Know to Prevent Accidents

Before we were even used to the idea, the kids were back in school for the fall semester. This means holidays are right around the corner in the form of travelling to spend time with friends and relatives for Thanksgiving and December celebrations. Longer weekends like the upcoming Veteran’s Day weekend and extended holiday breaks mean more people in the air and on the road in conditions that range from sunny days, to treacherous roads with ice and snow, to the weather-related delays and long lines at the airport. When the travel bug hits everyone, what are some things you can do to make sure your holiday travel is injury-free?

You know you are not the only one thinking about travel, and everyone is in a rush to get from here to there so they can spend longer times with friends and family, reliving traditions, eating great food, and taking part in winter sports. Here’s a checklist you can use to keep your sanity and safety during this time.

  • Practice patience. Shorter tempers flare and people rush to do everything from shopping to driving. Putting the pressure on yourself to hurry though the season means you might miss out on what is really important.
  • Give yourself plenty of time to get to the airport. Speeding on the road might cause an accident, or delay you even more if you were to receive a ticket.
  • Pack light and appropriately so that you can move through security lines quickly without lugging heavy baggage with you.
  • Wear appropriate clothing for travel. This might include closed-toe shoes and clothing without loose strings or scarves that could easily be caught on an elevator or conveyer belt.
  • Make sure you keep close eye on children in the airport. Make sure little ones have their hands held at all times.

Holidays are happy time for many, and travel of all sorts makes up a great part of the holiday for most. Do your part in ensuring safety for you and family members so you can ring in the new year with many more festivities to come.
