What Is Wellbutrin?
Wellbutrin is a brand name for bupropion hydrochloride, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) marketed by the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline. It is generally used as an antidepressant. A similar bupropion-based drug, Zyban, is also prescribed as an anti-smoking medication. Other SSRI drugs include Paxil, Zoloft, Prozac and Lexapro.
In the early stages of pregnancy, many women have been prescribed Wellbutrin or Zyban to combat severe depression or to quit smoking. Unfortunately, these drugs have been linked to a variety of health problems such as seizures, strokes and psychological disorders in adults and to a spectrum of birth defects in infants.
Wellbutrin Linked to Left Outflow Heart Birth Defects
Funded by the CDC, the National Birth Defects Prevention Study investigated the connection between cardiac birth defects and Wellbutrin use for children born from October 1997 through December 2004. This study found a strong link between the use of this drug during the first trimester of pregnancy and congenital heart defects, particularly left outflow heart birth defects.
A left outflow heart birth defect restricts blood flow out of the heart's left chambers. This can result in severe oxygen deprivation to the rest of the infant's body and brain. Surgery is required to correct this defect to the artery.
Wellbutrin Linked to Autism
Many SSRI drugs, including Wellbutrin, have been shown to cause autism in babies whose mothers took the drug during their pregnancies. According to a study in Archives of General Psychiatry (June 2011), women were twice as likely to give birth to autistic children if they used an SSRI drug during pregnancy.
