What is Vioxx?

Vioxx is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and was prescribed to reduce pain and inflammation such as that associated with arthritis. Vioxx helped manage acute pain and provided relief to the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis. It was made available to patients in both a tablet and a liquid form after the drug was initially approved by the FDA in May 1999 for the treatment of arthritis. However, in 2004, the dangers of Vioxx were made public. Have you been injured due to the anti-inflammatory drug, Vioxx? Vioxx presents cardiovascular dangers

On September 30, 2004, Vioxx was removed from the market after studies showed an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, blood clots and other cardiovascular complications.

If you have taken Vioxx and suffered from the medical conditions mention above, you may be entitle to compensation. Contact our New York Vioxx Attorney today.

Before the drug was withdrawn, the FDA issued a warning that all patients taking Vioxx have a 50 percent greater chance of heart attacks and sudden death caused by cardiac arrest. Also, patients found taking the highest recommended daily dosage of Vioxx had three times the risk of heart attack and sudden cardiac death as those not taking standard painkillers.

Studies show Vioxx Risk

It has been estimated that approximately 92,791,000 patients took Vioxx in the United States between 1999 and 2003. Since 2000, there have been numerous studies linking Vioxx to a significant increase in the number of cardiovascular events, heart attacks and strokes in patients who have taken Vioxx.

In a study published in December 2004 in the medical journal, Lancet, a review of randomized controlled trials, observational studies, and data from the federal Food and Drug Administration showed that among 21,432 patients, those taking Vioxx had a much greater rate of heart attacks (myocardial infarctions) than those taking other painkillers or a placebo.

The findings of such reports prompted the FDA to announce the risks of taking Vioxx. As a result, Merck modified the warnings packaging insert for Vioxx. However, increased concern caused Vioxx to be removed from the shelves after it was determined that the risks of taking Vioxx were unjustifiably too high for patients.
