New York Lexapro Attorneys

What Is Lexapro?

Generically known as escitalopram, Lexapro is part of the class of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which are used as antidepressant and anti-anxiety medications. Other SSRI drugs include Paxil, Zoloft, Prozac and Wellbutrin. Lexapro is distributed in the U.S. by Forest Laboratories and elsewhere by Lundbeck A/S under a variety of other names, including Seroplex, Sipralexa and Cipralex.

Although Lexapro was approved by the FDA in 2001, it has been shown to pose serious risks such as suicidal behavior in adults and birth defects in infants.

The New York Lexapro lawyers at the Finz firm are available to represent those who have been harmed by Lexapro and other defective drugs nationwide. With extensive resources and decades of experience, the Finz firm is a premier choice for trustworthy counsel and aggressive advocacy.

Birth Defects Linked to Lexapro

The New England Journal of Medicine and the National Birth Defects Prevention Study by the CDC point to a sobering link between Lexapro use during the first and third trimester of pregnancy and subsequent birth defects. Such birth defects can include:

  • Congenital heart defects
  • Atrial septal defects
  • Ventricular septal defects
  • Right ventricular outflow obstruction defects
  • Conotruncal defects
  • Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN)
  • Anencephaly or neural tube defects, which can create abnormal facial features
  • Craniosynostosis, which can create an abnormally shaped head
  • Omphaloceles, which involves abdominal organs protruding from the navel
  • Clubfoot
  • Spina bifida

Adverse Side Effects for Adults

Some of the most common adverse side effects for adults who take Lexapro include:

  • Dizziness
  • Dry mouth
  • Loss of appetite

Other less common but significant side effects may include:

  • Tremors
  • Seizures
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Serotonin syndrome

One of the most concerning risks associated with Lexapro use is the potential for an increase in suicidal thoughts or behaviors. Like some other antidepressant drugs, Lexapro has the unfortunate potential to increase the very symptoms that it was prescribed to treat, particularly for children and adolescents.
